Project Introduction

The Overall Objectives of the Korea Terminology Research Center for Language and Knowledge Engineering (KorTerm) are as follows:

  • By promoting collaborations in the field of terminology, facilitate communication between experts, and the exchange of knowledge.
  • Facilitate the formation of multi-functional terminologies verified by specialists and organizations in each field.
  • Support a domestic and international information infrastructure for efficient and standardized communication in the global information society.

▶ These Objectives will be Accomplished in the Following Ways:

  • Record and preserve previously-collected terminologies, including terminology uses and terminology publications, and provide the information on their circulation
  • Facilitate further research and development of organization networks within Korea’s terminology field
  • Promote the sharing of information and experiences concerning a methodology of harmonization on high-quality terminology preparation and guidelines.
To fulfill the above roles, KorTerm has created and is working in collaboration with an expert terminology research group comprised of specialized terminology researchers, as well as the Yonsei University Dictionary Compilation Group and expert organizations in diverse fields, and the main standards committees in Korea. Internationally, it also collaborates actively with InfoTerm (International Information Center for Terminology) and its member organizations.

▶ To summarize the key points:

  • Reliable terminology is necessary for effective communication, through which accurate knowledge is transferred. This reliability is achieved when terminologies are used in accordance with internationally-recognized standards, or the de facto standards generally accepted by the community of experts.
  • Multi-functional terminology is terminology data that can be used for multiple purposes. In other words, multi-functional terminologies could be terminologies used in lexicons for specialists, machine translation, and technical literature.
  • The harmonization methodology and guideline for the preparation of high-quality terminology refers to the methodology and guideline conforming with ISO/TC37 international standards, and which follows the rules and methodologies that clarify the uses of terminologies in each discipline.
This harmonization is performed by Korterm. The resulting terminologies are circulated after they have been verified by InfoTerm.
