Social Importance

  • To provide seamless personalized automated services in a ubiquitous computing environment, an intelligent agent is crucial. IT ontology infrastructure is the software infrastructure that is essential for an intelligent agent to function in the next-generation web environment.
  • To implement the knowledge service strategy in practice and to provide intelligent services, an IT ontology that integrates services and maximizes interoperability by standardizing the ontologies independently developed in various areas is becoming increasingly important.
  • Connecting different ontologies that have been developed in different parts of the world is crucial in the semantic web environment. Therefore, interconnecting the IT ontology most widely used in Korea with the international standard ontology will be possible by ensuring and verifying its practicability. Through this approach, connecting to the world’s diverse meaning-based services will become possible.

Cultural Importance

  • The process of creating an environment that adds comfort to everyday life becomes more efficient through improvements in service interoperability and development made possible by a standard IT ontology.
  • Because IT devices are present in every aspect of human life, IT device ontology influences both the uses of the devices and our lives themselves.
  • Increase the comparability and reusability of IT ontology by composing a partitioned ontology involving IT devices, IT services, and IT life, and by setting associations between concepts.

Economic Importance

  • Currently, the web is entering the age of semantic web, or the Web 3.0 era, the next step in its evolution following the Web 2.0 era, which was represented by blogs, Wikis, Rss, and Social Networks. We can increase the competitiveness of Korea’s web environment by securing the technologies that will be essential in the coming semantic web age.
  • According to Mills-Davis’s Project10X 2008, the growth rate of the semantic market that uses ontology is expected to increase 10-fold from 2006 to 2010, and 10-fold again from 2010 to 2015.
  • According to the 2008 Gartner Group’s analysis on semantic infrastructure, technologies such as Corporate Semantic Web, RSS, Corporate Blogging, and Text Mining will greatly advance, and their expected economic influence will be enormous.
